The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies.” – Gertrude Jekyll

Gardening connects us to the living world – calming our minds, nurturing our bodies, and supporting life all around us.

Even the smallest garden can become a place where biodiversity thrives and human well-being is quietly restored.

Gardens are often designed for beauty, food production, or conservation alone. But what if they could intentionally support thriving ecosystems and human health at the same time?

Biodiverse Wellness GardensTM explores the powerful connection between environmental sustainability and personal well-being – and how everyday garden practices can nurture both.

This platform connects ecological science, sustainable gardening, and wellness-informed design to help cultivate spaces where nature and people flourish side by side.

WHAT IS BIODIVERSE WELLNESS GARDENING?

Biodiverse wellness gardening is an approach to garden design and practice that intentionally supports both ecological biodiversity and human well-being.

By combining principles of biodiversity conservation, sustainable gardening, and nature-based wellness, gardens can become living spaces that nurture pollinators, strengthen ecosystems, and support human physical, mental, and emotional health.

The Biodiverse Wellness GardeningTM framework explores how thoughtful gardening practices can create meaningful connections between environmental sustainability and human flourishing.

THE BIODIVERSE WELLNESS GARDENINGTM  FRAMEWORK

At Biodiverse Wellness GardensTM, we explore how thoughtful gardening can enrich both biodiversity and human wellness.

Since 2017, I have been developing an integrated model that connects biodiversity health and human wellness through intentional garden design and practice.

While ecological conservation and human wellness are often viewed separately, they are deeply interconnected. The Biodiverse Wellness GardensTM framework connects them through three foundational pillars:

Ecological Biodiversity

Supporting native plant diversity, pollinators, soil health, habitat creation, and sustainable ecosystem practices.

Human Wellness

Designing gardens that nurture mental clarity, physical movement, nourishment, emotional resilience, and connection to place.  This understanding of wellness draws from holistic wellness models that recognize health as multi-dimensional, including physical, emotional, social, and spiritual aspects of well-being.

Regenerative Practice and Education

Applying research-based environmental knowledge, sustainable gardening principles, and practical teaching to create lasting, teachable impact.

Together, these pillars form the foundation of the Biodiverse Wellness GardeningTM approach, uniting biodiversity and human wellness in every garden.

Origins of the Biodiversity Wellness GardeningTM Framework

The idea behind Biodiverse Wellness GardeningTM grew from years of personal curiosity, educational study, and professional experience related to environmental sustainability and the restorative experience of gardening.

When this website was created in 2017, it became a place to further explore and articulate the connections between biodiversity, sustainable gardening, and human well-being.

The concept continues to evolve through ongoing research, environmental sustainability work and lived garden experience by Sarita Baweja.

“Gardens are not created or made, they unfold, spiraling open like the silk petals of an evening primrose flower to reveal the ground plot of the mind and heart of the gardener and the good earth.” –  Wendy Johnson

WHY THIS APPROACH MATTERS

At Biodiverse Wellness GardensTM we explore how small, intentional choices in our gardens can contribute to meaningful change to both people and the planet.

As natural habitats continue to decline and become increasingly fragmented, many plant, insect, and animal species face growing challenges to their survival. At the same time, increasing urbanization means that thoughtfully designed green spaces are becoming more important for human health and well-being.

Gardens – even small ones- can play an important role in addressing both of these challenges.

By supporting biodiversity including native plants, pollinators, soil health, and diverse habitats, gardens can contribute to local ecological resilience. At the same time, interacting with nature through presence in a garden and gardening can nurture mental restoration, physical activity, nourishment, and a deeper connection to place.

When gardens are designed intentionally with biodiversity and human wellness in mind, they can become more than isolated green spaces. They become living systems that support regeneration – for ecosystems and for people.

This perspective recognizes that the well-being of humans and the health of the natural world are deeply interconnected.

SCIENTIFIC AND RESEARCH FOUNDATIONS

The Biodiverse Wellness GardensTM framework draws inspiration from a growing body of research exploring the relationship between ecological health and human well-being.

Fields such as environmental sustainability, biodiversity conservation, ecological gardening, and nature-based health research increasingly demonstrate how access to biodiverse natural environments can support both ecosystem resilience and human physical and mental well-being.

Biodiverse Wellness GardensTM brings these ideas together through a garden-centered lens – exploring how everyday gardening practices can become small but meaningful acts of ecological stewardship and personal wellness.

ROOTED IN EXPERIENCE AND EVIDENCE

As someone who has been deeply interested in nature and gardening from a young age, I followed my interest and pursued higher education and work experiences in environmental sustainability. My work is grounded in professional experience in environmental sustainability, including biodiversity conservation and sustainable agriculture and food systems.

As an educator, I bring a foundation in teaching, research literacy, and translating complex concepts into accessible, practical guidance. These experiences shape the ecological perspective that informs the Biodiverse Wellness GardeningTM framework.

This platform reflects lived garden experience, evidence-based environmental sustainability and  knowledge and insights into human wellness – continually evolving through research, practice, and reflection.
